Am I charged as part of a reservation request before I even receive the response?

No, the credit card will only be debited upon confirmation of the availability of the experience by the host. As long as the availability is not confirmed, the means of payment will not be taken. However, some banks temporarily block the amount of the future withdrawn amount which will only be debited when (and if) the reservation is confirmed.
