About the winery

Founded in 1920 by brothers José, Manuel, and Albano Costa, Caves São João is a family business that originally dedicated itself to the commercialization of fine Douro wines and liqueurs. Today, it is the oldest family-owned winery still operating in the municipality of Anadia.

In the 1930s, with the prohibition of the production of Port wines outside of Vila Nova de Gaia, the company began producing and marketing table wines from Bairrada. At the same time, it started producing natural sparkling wines following the "Champagne" method. At this stage, it is important to highlight the role played by the French winemaker Mr. Gaston Mainousson.

Originally from Carrola, in the parish of Burgo, Arouca, Célia Alves is 47 years old and holds a degree in Food Engineering from the Higher School of Agriculture of Coimbra, as well as a postgraduate degree in Food Safety from the Catholic University of Porto. Professionally, she currently holds the positions of manager and Production/Quality Director at Caves São João, in Anadia, where she has worked since 2004.
