About the winery

The Cartuxa Winery, located at Quinta de Valbom, is intimately linked to the Society of Jesus. In 1580, the Jesuit priest Pedro Silva, rector of the University of Évora, acquired Quinta de Valbom to house the University's faculty. The construction of the Jesuit Rest House took about 10 years and resulted in a building with multiple accommodations, a refectory, and a chapel.

In 1759, with the expulsion of the Society of Jesus from the country by the Marquis of Pombal, the Quinta became state property and, in 1776, was equipped with a wine press that quickly gained importance in the region. Its proximity to the Carthusian Monastery led to it being known, to this day, as the Cartuxa Winery.

In 1871, the great-grandfather of the founder of the Foundation, José Maria Eugénio de Almeida, acquired this Quinta. After his death, it was his son, Carlos Maria Eugénio de Almeida, who dedicated himself to the continuity and expansion of the production of Casa Agrícola Eugénio de Almeida. It was his initiative to plant the vineyards that constituted the earliest origin of the Foundation's wines. With the progressive expansion and success of the Institution's wine production, the Cartuxa Winery, installed in the former refectory of the Jesuit Rest Home, underwent improvements. Of these, the most notable was the major restructuring that took place between 1993 and 1995, which allowed for the re-equipping and expansion of all sectors of the winery, considerably increasing its winemaking potential.
