Situated on the first hills of the Vomano River valley, a couple of kilometers from the Adriatic Sea and less than twenty kilometers from the Gran Sasso mountain range (2,920 meters), the Orlandi Contucci Ponno winery enjoys a privileged climatic position, benefiting from both the thermoregulatory effects of the sea and the breezes from the high mountains that temper the heat of summer nights, ensuring the vines a regular and continuous growing cycle essential for the development of the grapes' organoleptic qualities.
The vineyard soils are alluvial and gravelly, with a particular calcareous mix that has favored the planting of particularly high-quality Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and Cabernet grapes, imported directly from France after analyses confirmed that this mix was entirely similar to that of one of the most prized areas of the Bordeaux region.
It is in this context that we have sought to revitalize some original clones of Montepulciano d'Abruzzo—a grape variety already present in the area at the end of the 18th century—by selecting them for their characteristics in relation to the soil and microclimate. Produced and vinified according to its specifications, this wine can compete favorably with the most balanced Italian wines.
